The Never Tilting World is one of my most anticipated books of 2019. Between the cover and the description, I was sold. So I am very excited to have been allowed to read an eARC of this amazing story! This is my first Rin Chupeco book and it has certainly made a fan out of me.
Thank you for Fantastic Flying Book Club for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour! Check out my review below as well as some of my fan-made playlist.

Frozen meets Mad Max in this epic teen fantasy duology bursting with star-crossed romance, immortal heroines, and elemental magic, perfect for fans of Furyborn.
Generations of twin goddesses have long ruled Aeon. But seventeen years ago, one sister’s betrayal defied an ancient prophecy and split their world in two. The planet ceased to spin, and a Great Abyss now divides two realms: one cloaked in perpetual night, the other scorched by an unrelenting sun.
While one sister rules Aranth—a frozen city surrounded by a storm-wracked sea —her twin inhabits the sand-locked Golden City. Each goddess has raised a daughter, and each keeps her own secrets about her sister’s betrayal.
But when shadowy forces begin to call their daughters, Odessa and Haidee, back to the site of the Breaking, the two young goddesses —along with a powerful healer from Aranth, and a mouthy desert scavenger —set out on separate journeys across treacherous wastelands, desperate to heal their broken world. No matter the sacrifice it demands.
The Never Tilting World is a hero’s journey two times over. It follows four people– two daughters of twin goddesses and their two companions as they set out to right a wrong that broke their world seventeen years prior. Odessa and Tianlan grew up in Aranth, a land of night where crops cannot grow and flooding looms as a threat. Meanwhile, Hailee and Arjun grew up near the Golden City, a land of daytime and hot temperatures, where water is scarce.
Odessa and Hailee grew up hearing two different versions of the Breaking and unaware of each other’s existences. They are as much the protagonists of this story as well as the victims of their mother’s actions. Even now, I still don’t know what or who to believe.
I am usually hesitant to read books with multiple perspectives. With multiple perspectives come the risk of flat characters, mind hopping, and showing preference for one arc over the others. However, Rin Chupeco fleshes out her characters incredibly well. She is also deliberate in switching between the four perspectives in a natural manner that allows us to follow Odessa’s and Hailee’s journeys to the Great Abyss.
Let me say that not only is the concept original but so is the outstanding world building. With every detail about Odessa and Hailee’s world, I learned just how dangerous their homes as well as why they were willing to risk their lives on this journey. Given their backgrounds, I can understand why this moment in time was when they felt the need to try to reverse the Breaking.
By far my favorite part of The Never Tilting World was the unique magic system. Although it is compared to Frozen, I consider it closer to Avatar, the Last Airbender. In this world, everyone is born with a gate– akin to an affinity– for air, fire, water, earth, ether. They can then control the world around them using patterns– sort of like spells or very specific tasks. I enjoyed that even though this system is unlike one I have seen before, Chupeco did not overwhelm with information to explain how it worked. Instead, she revealed it little by little.
Another aspect of The Never Tilting World that I appreciated was the romance. On one hand, we have a heterosexual romance between kind-of-enemies-to-lovers and a sapphic romance between a bodyguard and her ward. Both have sufficient tension and attraction to match the temperatures of the Golden City.
While the Never Tilting World is a satisfying novel by itself, it also leaves you wanting more. Next year cannot come fast enough.
Despite an unsettling resemblance to Japanese revenants, Rin always maintains her sense of hummus. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. Dances like the neighbors are watching.
She is represented by Rebecca Podos of the Helen Rees Agency. She is also fond of speaking in the third person, and may as well finish this short bio in this manner. While she does not always get to check her Goodreads page, she does answer questions posed to her here as promptly as she is able to.
