Monthly TBR: January

I plan on hitting the ground running so I can build up healthy reading habits before classes consume my life. So far, it looks like I’m doing well. As of Thursday night, I’ve read four books!

There’s another 20 days in the month. There’s room to slip up OR read more. Check out my list for the month and tell me if you think I can do it!

4

The Ruin of Kings (A Chorus of Dragons #1) by Jenn Lyons (Excerpt)

I’m a sucker for antiheroes and villains– especially when they’re prophetized to destroy an empire. Oops?

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (Extract)

Dragons. Forbidden magic. Queendom!!! I don’t think there’s anything else I need to know that I need to have this book NOW.

To Best the Boys by Mary Weber

I’m ALWAYS here for a heroine who says f*ck the status quote, especially if it’s to save their family.

The Mermaid’s Voice Returns in This One (Women Are Some Kind of Magic #3) by Amanda Lovelace

I read the The Princess Saves Herself in This One about a year ago, and I really loved the feminist messages in it. Super excited to dig into the finale of this poetry series!

The Wicked King (The Cruel Prince #2) by Holly Black

The Cruel Prince had a horrible– wonderful?– cliffhanger. I’m SCARED, and excited, to read the sequel since I know the stakes are 10x higher.

The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves #1) by Roshani Chokshi

The city of love is also the city of secrets. Way to combine my love of France with a high stakes treasure hunt, Roshani!

Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

So far, I’ve only read Illuminae. But with the overwhelmingly rave reviews about the audiobooks, I decided to reread Illuminae before continuing with the series. It’s not like there’s such a thing as too much AIDAN! XD

Stalking Jack the Ripper Series by Kerri Maniscalco

@popthebutterfly is hosting a read-along for the series on instagram. Like with Illuminae, I’ve only read the first book, so I’m starting this series from scratch. I adored Cresswell and Rose’s snarky humor and lowkey flirting. May as well enjoy it at its full glory!

Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

Families are messy, especially sisterhood. This gorgeous book hooked me in part for the fairytale retelling, in part for the cover.

The Wicker King by K. Ancrum

I haven’t read a lot of LGBTQIA+ or mental health books in a while. This book has both so it was an easy choice to pick it up!

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

@Alchemyandink and @paperbackbones are both hosting #ardentlyaustenbookcluh, an all-Austen readalong from January to July. I’ve only ever read Pride & Prejudice— I know, don’t judge! No time like the present to remedy my miseducation.

Dreaming Awake (Going Under #2) by Gwen Hayes

Truthfully, I’m not even sure why I’m reading the sequel when the first book was full of awkwardly done tropes. Maybe I just want to see if Theia grows a personality?

Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber

I try to stay away from hyped books till the last book is released. With Finale coming out in a few months, it’s the perfect time to check out Caraval.

The Savage Dawn (The Girl at Midnight #3) by Melissa Grey

The world and mythology Melissa Grey created in The Girl of Midnight has easily become one of my favorites. I’m eager to figure out the fates of Echo, Caius, and the world!

This is the first time I’m doing an official monthly TBR. Usually, I go based on the books available at my library and what I am in the mood for. It’s been hard to find time to read in college, much less figure out what I want to read. Fingers crossed I can make this habit and stick to my goal.

Are you a mood reader or a planner? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. So many books that I want to read there! I am going to have to work through my back list soon as I have missed reading so many books that look fantastic like the Illuminae files. The Wicked King is next on my tbr though. I am definitely a mood reader although review copies always come first.

  2. Oh wow there are some really good choices there! I loved The Wicked King but it almost killed me. I love the Illuminae audiobooks. Just so amazing! I really want to read Caraval as well might be a February plan. X
